Glass Extensions FAQs
What is a Glass Extension?
A glass extension is an extension of your home made entirely or mainly of glass. They can be used for any room but work especially well as kitchens and living rooms. Conservatories and orangeries are typical uses for glass extensions.
Where Can I Add a Glass Extension?
A Glass Extension can be added to any part of your home that you may wish to increase the living space. They do, however, work especially well as kitchens and living rooms. With the use of slim sliding doors, you can even link indoor living to outdoor life by connecting your garden to your living space, in a way that means you can seamlessly step straight from one into the other.
How long do Glass Extensions take to build?
Because every Glass Extension we build is unique and made bespoke to individual customer requirements, we’re unable to specify an exact amount of time for building a glass extension. However, we estimate that it will take around 10-12 weeks from the time you’ve finalised your design with GH Interior Glass until building work has been completed.
Will I Need Planning Permission for a Glass Extension?
To have a glass extension added to your home, you shouldn’t need planning permission for a glass extension as long as certain conditions are followed:
- The glass extension must not cover more than half the area around the original house
- It must not be higher than 4m or higher than the highest roof of your home
- It must not extend by more than 3m beyond the rear wall of your original house if an attached house or 4m if detached
- Glass extensions are normally classed as a permitted development. However, each project and home is different so it’s always best to check first.
- Your extension should not cover more than half the area around your house.
- Your extension must not be more than four metres in height, or be taller than your home’s uppermost roof.
- If your house is an attached one, the extension should not extend by more than three metres beyond your house’s original rear wall. If it is a detached house, four metres is the top limit.
- Such structures are usually classified as permitted developments, though, thanks to every project being a unique undertaking, it may be best to check before proceeding.
